Exploring the Subgenres of Metal: Death Metal

Brief History: The two bands the pretty much help to create Death Metal are Venom and Slayer. Venom had the hash sound mixed with the satanic themes of their music. Slayer had the speed and violence. Possessed, some has the first true Death Metal band, was a huge part on developing Death Metal. They released their depute album, Seven Churches, in 1985. But their was another Death Metal band coming up and their name was Death. Hailing from Florida, which in the 80's (And some could say today) seems like the Death Metal capital. Death released their 1987 depute called Scream Bloody Gore.

In the late 80's more Death Metal bands start to come about in the United States such as: Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, Obituary, Morbid Angel and Deicide. Then Death Metal reached all the way to Sweden. Created bands such as Carnage, God Macabre, Entombed, Dismember and Unleashed.

Out of the early 90's you see two sub-genres of Death Metal appear: Grindcore and Melodic Death Metal. But even with these genres coming out you still have bands like Death releasing good solid Death Metal albums. Such as their 1991 release Human. They started what is called the Modern Death Metal style. Such as Suffocation's 1991 release Effigy of the Forgotten.

Two record labels became the driving point of Death Metal. And chances are if you saw a Death Metal release it was probably from  Earache Records or Roadrunner Records. Earache having bands such as Carcass, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, and Entombed. And Roadrunner having bands such as Obituary, and Pestilence.

In September 1990  one of the first North American death metal festivals happen. Called Day of Death, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and featured 26 bands including Autopsy, Broken Hope, Hellwitch, Obliveon, Revenant, Viogression, Immolation, Atheist, and Cynic.

Death Metal was never a mainstream genre. You won't see Death Metal songs getting radio play, well not in the States (I can't not speak for the radio station over seas). But even with out radio play it still managers to stay around in the under ground, just waiting to by unleashed.
